Ergonomic sitting: tips for a healthy posture at work

An ergonomic sitting position is important for a healthy posture and can help prevent back, shoulder and neck pain in the long term. In this blog, we will share some important tips on how to sit ergonomically and what factors to consider to achieve a healthy posture in the workplace.

We spend a lot of our time sitting, be it in the office, at a desk at home or while driving. However, incorrect sitting posture can lead to chronic back, shoulder and neck pain, which can affect our health in the long term.

An ergonomic sitting position is therefore of great importance. But what exactly does “sitting ergonomically” mean? Here are some important tips:

Adjust the seat height: Make sure your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. Your thighs should be parallel to the floor. If your chair does not have a height-adjustable function, you can use a footrest to achieve the right height.

Adjust the backrest: The backrest should be in an upright position and support your spine. Make sure the lower back (lumbar spine) is supported. An adjustable backrest is ideal to allow for individual adjustment.
Adjust armrests: The armrests should be adjusted so that your arms rest on the armrests at a 90-degree angle. Make sure your shoulders are relaxed and not hunched up.
Viewing angle: Set your monitor at eye level to avoid unnecessary strain on the neck muscles. Use a monitor mount if necessary.
Movement: Avoid a static sitting position. Stand up, walk around and do regular stretching exercises to relieve your muscles.

Ergonomic sitting can help prevent physical discomfort and increase productivity, so make sure you adopt a healthy sitting posture to benefit from good health in the long term.
